As described by Claude LeSuer of Artspeak, Tom Merwin's paintings are “lyrical expressionist landscapes.”

Merwin studied at the Art Students League under the direction of Tom Fogarty, Sydney Dickensen, Knox Martin, and Vaclav Vytlacil. However, his training in abstract expressionist painting is evidently contrasted in his current body of work with the influence of his love of the Hudson River School and of Chinese and Japanese painting. Merwin explains that “my painting process expresses a layering of symbol and spirituality using nature as a doorway to the expression of existential concerns.”

The world of each painting reveals itself slowly to Merwin but he says the viewer plays a role in creating each piece. At the completion of the painting, a transformation occurs with the viewer's participation. The viewer sees in the painting a reflection of their own landscape and experiences and therefore transforms the meaning through their involvement.

LeSuer goes on to say that “Merwin is a "painter's painter" an artist of a type all too often overlooked amid the overblown hype which attends more fashionable crudities. His trump card, however is a boldness of execution which has its own refined power."
